The role of agriculture in economic development and poverty alleviation, particularly in countries like Tanzania, has been a topic of ongoing debate. Despite its significant contribution to Tanzania's economy, with agriculture accounting for 28.4% of the GDP and employing 66.6% of the workforce, poverty remains pervasive, with nearly half of the population living below the poverty line. This essay aims to examine the role of agriculture in Tanzania's economic development and poverty reduction between 2002 and 2022. Through an analysis of challenges and fluctuations in growth patterns, it explores the sector's impact on driving economic growth and efforts to overcome poverty. Adopting a broad definition of agriculture, the essay highlights its significance and explores recommendations for enhancing agriculture growth, improving quality of life, and reducing poverty.
